  • Complete the laboratory tests, and perform an initial mammogram.
  • It is very important that you quit smoking for a certain time before and after surgery.
  • You should avoid taking aspirins, anti-inflammatory medications and herbal supplements to control bleeding during surgery.

Advantages

Breast reduction surgery can solve the following health problems:

  • Chronic back, neck and shoulder pain.
  • Irritation or chronic skin rash under the breasts
  • Pain in the nerves
  • Limitation of physical activities
  • Low self-esteem related to large size

Expected results

Dr. Franklin Peña will try to achieve symmetry between both breasts; however, some variation in their size and shape is likely to occur. It is also possible to reduce the size of the areola.

The scars of the incision may fade over time and take the necessary measures for this, but they will never disappear completely. To see results of this surgery, visit our gallery

Intervention

The specific technique used for breast reduction may vary depending on the size, so it is available to Dr. Franklin Peña to use the technique that he considers most appropriate in each case.

The procedure may include next:

  • Surgery through incisions
  • Liposuction to remove excess fat accumulated in the breasts

Usually, the following is done:

  • An incision is made around the areola and under each breast.
  • Excess tissue, fat and breast skin are removed to reduce its size.
  • The breast is remodeled and repositions both the nipple and the areola

The nipple and areola:

  • They usually stay in the breast
  • If the breasts are very large, it may be necessary to remove the nipple and areola, and relocate them to a higher position like a skin graft

Post-operative

After surgery it is normal for you to feel somewhat tired in the following days, but you can live a normal life after 48 hours. Most discomforts are well controlled with the medication described by Dr. Franklin Peña, although some may be felt for a couple of weeks.

The bandage or dressings will be removed in a few days, being replaced by a special bra, which you should wear as directed by Dr. Franklin Peña, in the follow-up consultation.

It is normal for you to feel burning in the nipples during the first weeks. You may also notice a decrease in sensitivity, this situation is usually temporary, although in some reductions (depending on the size and tissue removal) it may be definitive. The stitches are removed between 7 and 14 days.

You can return to work in 2 or 3 weeks, although in a few days you can return to your daily life. You should limit strong physical activities for a few weeks, until you recover from the operation. It is advisable to avoid sexual intercourse in the first 15 days, to avoid swelling of the incisions; during the first 3 or 4 weeks avoid intense physical contact of the breasts. It is normal for small scabs or some fluid to appear through the incisions. As time goes by, you will be prompted to return to the consultation to evaluate the evolution.
