Scarring is the natural healing process that provides the hermetic seal to the injured skin.

In plastic surgery, scars are created every time the skin is incised. The scar is the body’s memory of the injury or surgical procedure suffered. Part of the art of plastic surgery consists of concealing the incisions so that the scars remain hidden (in folds, in the thickness of the hair or along changes in contour.

Here are some tips to take care of the scar after plastic surgery:

Keep the scar clean and dry: Clean the scar gently and be sure to dry it well after bathing or showering.

Use specific scar creams and ointments: Ask your plastic surgeon about recommended creams and ointments to help reduce the appearance of the scar.

Protect the scar from the sun: Prolonged exposure to the sun can worsen the appearance of the scar, so it is important to apply a sunscreen with a high protection factor and cover it with appropriate clothing.

Do mobility exercises: If your plastic surgeon allows it, perform gentle exercises to improve mobility in the area of the scar and prevent the formation of adhesions.

Avoid stress on the scar: Avoid activities that can stress the scar, such as heavy lifting, for the first few months after surgery.

In summary, it is important to follow your plastic surgeon’s instructions and be patient during the healing process.

Over time, the scar will lighten and its appearance will improve. However, it is important to keep in mind that each scar is unique and its final appearance may vary.

Nutrition: Its importance in safe plastic surgery

Health depends closely on our diet, which is why it is so influential in plastic surgery, both before and after it.

If you have decided to take the step for an aesthetic surgical intervention, you have come to the right place. Feeding before surgery has an additional benefit, since it will help to improve quickly and even reduce the possibility of bleeding, improve scars and boost the immune system.

The relationship between diet and health

Being overweight is closely linked to many diseases, which is why it can be said that diet is closely related to health. Poor diet is not just an obesity problem, the negative effects can affect anyone. That is why we always recommend maintaining a stable weight and a body mass index of 28 for body surgery.

One of the requirements that must be taken into account before undergoing an elective or planned surgery such as cosmetic surgeries, is to take care of the diet for a time before it.

3 Main reasons to take care of your diet before an aesthetic operation

Reduces complications
In plastic surgery, the techniques used always advocate risk reduction, but maintaining a balanced diet beforehand will help the body to be stronger and protected against any setback in the operating room.

Improves recovery time
Any surgery, even if it is not cosmetic, entails a recovery period. A healthy diet improves the healing mechanisms of our body, so you will feel better.

Best results
There are some surgeries that offer better results when you are at your ideal weight, as in the case of post-bariatric surgeries or massive weight loss. It is better to achieve the recommended weight according to your height and physical build, so the results will be more satisfactory.

Maintaining healthy habits after cosmetic surgery may seem obvious, because if you don’t take care of what you eat, you can’t sustain the results over time.

Healthy foods contain nutrients, fibers, antioxidants that prolong the results and make it more noticeable.

In conclusion, nutrition can determine the success of plastic surgery. In any case, the consultation with Dr. Franklin Peña will help you assess the success of the surgery and which one is the most appropriate according to your physical conditions.

Remember that you can request the ESTIMATE of any plastic surgery that interests you by click here.

Considering a nose job or rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, is an increasingly common cosmetic surgery among young people, but it is also one of the most difficult to perform and with results that are also difficult to achieve.

The first thing that the patient must bear in mind is that in this surgery, more than seeking perfection, it is about finding an improvement.

Therefore, # 1 There are no perfect results
This is important to keep in mind when considering surgery. Having a realistic goal of what can be achieved with rhinoplasty is essential, and this should be detailed at the time of consultation with your plastic surgeon.

In the consultation, you must be clear about what can and cannot be done.

# 2 You will not go out with just a small bandage on your nose
After the nose job you will have to use a splint over the bridge, your nostrils may have blocked and it may also be necessary to place pads over the drain.

# 3 The inflammation will not allow you to see results immediately
Swelling and bruising after rhinoplasty is totally normal. You must bear in mind that this inflammation will not allow you to see the results until a few months later.

# 4 Sunglasses
We know how essential sunglasses can be, especially in our tropical climate, but you won’t be able to wear glasses after rhinoplasty until healed, as they can cause the bridge of the nose to not heal properly. If you have prescription glasses to see, it is recommended to wear contact lenses during recovery, at least the first month.

# 5 Your voice may vary during recovery
As long as the inflammation persists in that area, you may have a different tone of voice than yours and it may be annoying for weeks, and even months after surgery.

Thinking about a Rhinoplasty?

Recovery of a liposculpture
Recovery from a liposculpture or liposuction can last from days to months, depending on the size of the area that has been worked and the patient.

In general, recovery progresses in such a way that the patient can return to their routines after one or two weeks, and the recovery and full result is achieved in a few months.

After the first week after liposuction, the patient can move normally, with minimal discomfort.

Dr. Franklin Peña recommends that his patients wear girdles for at least the first post-operative days, in this way it helps to control inflammation and speed up recovery time.

After liposuction you can move and walk without difficulty, but it is recommended to have a person accompany you during the recovery process and thus guarantee the possible rest for the following days.

The first two weeks after liposculpture
After the surgery, a night of hospitalization is normal, to discharge the next day. The patient will go home with a drainage through the incisions, this facilitates the exit of the anesthetic solution and reduces the recovery time.

The inflammation will continue to go down as the weeks go by, until you see the final result. The skin around the treated area may appear loose, but it will tighten over time. This will depend a lot on the degree of elasticity of the skin, which depends on the age and genetics of the patient, it is estimated that in about six months the skin can be seen taut.
It is recommended to maintain control of the liposculpture area to avoid infections, through strict hygiene.

Fear of anesthesia? What is anesthesia exactly?
Anesthesia consists of providing lack of sensitivity or pain, and helps to establish the optimal conditions to perform surgeries, providing safety to the patient, as well as an adequate recovery after surgery.

During the surgical procedure, the anesthesiologist, who is the specialist doctor in charge of administering anesthesia, remains with the patient, monitoring vital signs and ensuring that anesthesia is maintained throughout the surgical procedure.

Will I feel any pain?
Plastic surgery procedures are generally very well controlled with regular pain relief. Which means that the patient rarely describes any type of pain or discomfort. Analgesics are monitored by the anesthesiologist during surgery to avoid postoperative pain as well, which is supplemented by treatment during hospitalization.

What type of anesthesia is the best?
There are different options to adapt to the type of intervention, patient and duration of the procedure in the operating room. It is important to understand that this decision is made with a prior evaluation.

Types of anesthesia most used in plastic surgery

Local anesthesia
Local anesthesia is used in surgeries or small interventions, infiltrating with oral anesthetics in the area to be operated.
With this anesthesia the patient is aware of the entire process, but will not feel pain. It is usually used in aesthetic medicine to treat scars, moles, freckles, among other minor procedures.

Sedation
Sedation can be light or deep, and consists of the administration of drugs that help reduce the degree of anxiety that the patient may present. It is supported with local anesthesia to avoid pain. It is used in liposuction of certain areas, otoplasty, gynecomastia and others, depending on the patient’s needs.

Regional anesthesia
Regional anesthesia consists of sleeping certain areas of the body. The most widely used is the epidural, which, together with spinal anesthesia, is used for interventions on the lower half of the body. It is usually combined with sedation to improve patient comfort.
It is used for surgeries such as calf implants, liposuction, abdominoplasty, buttock augmentation, procedures lasting less than two hours in the operating room.

General anesthesia
General anesthesia is recommended for long-term surgeries or for areas of the body where the previous ones are insufficient. The patient is totally asleep on assisted ventilation. This anesthesia can be intravenous, by dropper or inhaled. It is used in augmentation or reduction mammoplasty, combined surgeries, abdominoplasty, blepharoplasty and others.

Is anesthesia safe today?
The education and training of anesthesiologists today keep the risks to a minimum. This, accompanied by monitoring equipment that is equipped with high technology and even auxiliary batteries to prevent.

A trained and experienced anesthesiology team is essential for a successful process.

Results of liposculpture

The final results of a liposculpture will be seen in about six months after surgery. Although some patients can see immediate results from the change, it is recommended to wait for the area to deflate.

Typically, up to 10 pounds of fat can be removed, resulting in improved body contouring. Liposuction can remove fat accumulations in small areas, where exercise does not provide the expected result.

How long will it take to see the final result of liposculpture?

The swelling in the area can last a few weeks, and sometimes months. Which does not allow to see the final results, until after about six months. The skin in the liposculpture-treated area may feel loose, as it will take time for the body to adjust to the new molded figure.

Scars from liposculpture and liposuction

In general, liposuction incisions do not exceed a quarter of an inch, large enough for the cannula to be inserted. For this reason, the scars are very small and after a few weeks they can go unnoticed.

During your initial consultation, Dr. Franklin Peña will discuss the scarring and bruising that liposculpture will leave behind. These concerns, although minor, are still important issues on an aesthetic level.

What to take to the clinic on the day of your surgery?

We have compiled what we understand would be more important to take the day of your surgery to the clinic in your handbag.

You should take into account that the hospitalization of cosmetic surgery is usually one night. So we recommend lightweight luggage for such purposes.

Here is a list of the most important, but you should always follow the instructions of your plastic surgeon:

Medical history, previously requested medical exams

It is very important to have the result of the analysis, in case you need to evaluate or consult something that day.

Medicines you usually consume

Your surgeon should have knowledge in advance about the medications you frequently consume, whether over-the-counter, prescription pain relievers or vitamins.

Identification documents

You must bring with you your identification documents that will be requested at the time of admission. You must also complete income forms, these vary depending on the center of attention.

Personal hygiene items

We recommend a towel (although you must take the day of admission) toothbrush, toothpaste, antibacterial soap and other basic items.

Pajamas, light and comfortable clothes

Forget about very tight clothes and uncomfortable fabrics. The most important thing in the post-operative stage will be comfort. Depending on the surgery, you should wear a girdle when you leave the clinic or post-surgical bra (in the case of breast procedures).

Phone with full charge and a wall charger

This recommendation is made, because many times the mobile is downloaded and the patients request chargers from nurses and other medical equipment. Bring your wall charger to connect it to the room during your stay.

You must be accompanied by a family member or friend

This last recommendation, but not least, is NOT NEGOTIABLE . You must be accompanied by a person who is willing to help you during the process and provide support.

Dr. Franklin Peña’s team is ready to receive you and advise you on what you need to know about plastic surgeries.

You can request an appointment, by contacting 809-535-6060, through our online consultation you can access the budget of this surgery.

The first thing you should take into account during the postoperative process to your plastic surgery, are the recommendations made by your plastic surgeon. So it is very important that you follow the medication indicated by this, as this will serve to prevent infections and reduce inflammation that may appear after the intervention.

1. Healthy eating and exercises
A balanced diet is vital for wounds to heal as soon as possible. It is only necessary to avoid excess salt and fat. Ingest fruits, meats, cereals, yogurt, cheeses, etc. In this recovery period, your body needs the necessary nutrients for the healing process, so you should not do rigorous diets at this stage.

2. Rest and activity
Rest is essential during the postoperative process, especially avoiding intense or strenuous activities, but this should not be confused with absolute inactivity, unless your surgeon recommends it, or depends on the surgery you have performed. But, it is very important to walk at least every 2 hours during the day to help the circulation of the legs.

3. Medications
Since the plastic surgery starts and until 10 or 15 days later, medications such as anti-inflammatories, antibiotics, vitamins, creams to prevent bruises and healing medicines to apply to wounds are indicated. It is very important that you follow the instructions as recommended by your plastic surgeon, in order to obtain the best results.

4. Hygiene
The healing or cleaning of the wound should be done without fail on the second day of surgery, and thereafter daily, which includes a full bath and surgical soap for your wounds, if necessary, purified water to remove the soap.

5. Postsurgical compression garments (girdles)
The strips are an essential complement to improve and accelerate the period of inflammation. It is vital to use post-surgical girdles, which should not be confused with reducing girdles, as they could hurt wounds and skin. It is recommended to use them at least, for 2 months.

6. Postoperative revisions
The importance of follow-up during the postoperative process is essential, since problems may arise which, discovered early, could avoid major complications. In the first 21 days you must go at least one day a week to be evaluated by your plastic surgeon. In case you have had to travel, it is recommended to stay in the country for a minimum of 15 days from the day of surgery, so that before any eventuality you can go to the surgeon who attended it.
