What should be taken into account before plastic surgery?

Plastic surgery, like any other surgery, involves risks. But in this, there is the factor that the patient is in optimal health, physical and mental condition and decides voluntarily to enter the operating room to improve some aspect that bothers him. Therefore, it is very important that the patient has the requirements to be a candidate for the contemplated surgery.

We have compiled some of the points that we consider most important to start planning a plastic surgery, with the aim of providing guidance to patients so that they have at their disposal the appropriate knowledge to make a good choice about the desired procedure, the plastic surgeon and the facilities where to perform plastic surgery.

In this article we will focus on 4 points or requirements that we consider basic when planning a plastic surgery.

Choose the right procedure for the patient: consider if he really needs it

Considering that it is an elective surgery because it is not considered a medical necessity or an emergency, it is important that you make sure of everything that the procedure you choose encompasses. Both the risks and complications that may arise, as well as the preparation for the post-surgery. The time you will need for recovery is essential.

Be sure to ask your plastic surgeon as many questions as necessary about the procedure. It is normal to feel anxiety, either because of the excitement of the new experience or a little post-operative stress due to the expectation of the result.

Patient: Being a good candidate for the procedure

In plastic surgery, a good candidate must be a healthy person, with a stable ideal weight. We recommend that the body mass index be at 28.

Here you can find more information about the Body Mass Index

Apart from the analyzes and discussing the medical history of the patient, the surgeon must be honest about the state of health in general.

Some important points to mention to your plastic surgeon:

Previous illnesses that have required hospitalization, medication consumption, previous surgery of any kind and if any complications occurred during or after it.

All types of allergies and any reaction to previous anesthesia.

The use of current medications, such as vitamins, supplements such as herbal teas, alcohol, tobacco, drugs of any kind.

Contraceptives

It is very important that you stop smoking before and after surgery, at least 30 days before and after.

There are certain medications that, due to their components, the surgeon could ask you to stop taking.

Here you can read more about Care after plastic surgery

Plastic surgeon: Qualified and have experience for the selected surgery

Selecting a certified plastic surgeon who gives you confidence is a very important step.

Some details you can take into account:

Must have completed at least 5 years of surgical training with a minimum of 2 years in plastic surgery.

Have demonstrable experience in all plastic surgery procedures.

Operates only in facilities accredited and certified by the relevant health authorities.

He adheres to a strict code of ethics and is an active member of the medical and surgical societies of his country.

You can verify the affiliation of your plastic surgeon in SODOCIPRE

Certified facilities: the medical center must have the appropriate permits according to each country, and have the professional medical staff and necessary equipment.

Regulations on suitable establishments for plastic surgery may vary from country to country. In any case, it must be certified or accredited for such purposes, you can find this out by contacting the competent authorities according to your country. In the case of the Dominican Republic, it has the Authorization and Accreditation Directorate of the Ministry of Public Health.

Have a professional medical team and the necessary equipment that can respond in the event of an emergency.

What to take to the clinic on the day of your surgery?

We have compiled what we understand would be more important to take the day of your surgery to the clinic in your handbag.

You should take into account that the hospitalization of cosmetic surgery is usually one night. So we recommend lightweight luggage for such purposes.

Here is a list of the most important, but you should always follow the instructions of your plastic surgeon:

Medical history, previously requested medical exams

It is very important to have the result of the analysis, in case you need to evaluate or consult something that day.

Medicines you usually consume

Your surgeon should have knowledge in advance about the medications you frequently consume, whether over-the-counter, prescription pain relievers or vitamins.

Identification documents

You must bring with you your identification documents that will be requested at the time of admission. You must also complete income forms, these vary depending on the center of attention.

Personal hygiene items

We recommend a towel (although you must take the day of admission) toothbrush, toothpaste, antibacterial soap and other basic items.

Pajamas, light and comfortable clothes

Forget about very tight clothes and uncomfortable fabrics. The most important thing in the post-operative stage will be comfort. Depending on the surgery, you should wear a girdle when you leave the clinic or post-surgical bra (in the case of breast procedures).

Phone with full charge and a wall charger

This recommendation is made, because many times the mobile is downloaded and the patients request chargers from nurses and other medical equipment. Bring your wall charger to connect it to the room during your stay.

You must be accompanied by a family member or friend

This last recommendation, but not least, is NOT NEGOTIABLE . You must be accompanied by a person who is willing to help you during the process and provide support.

Dr. Franklin Peña’s team is ready to receive you and advise you on what you need to know about plastic surgeries.

You can request an appointment, by contacting 809-535-6060, through our online consultation you can access the budget of this surgery.

What is brachioplasty or arm lifting?
It is the technique used to remove excess skin hanging from the top of the rod.

Most patients have this condition when they have a rapid weight reduction, or lack of elasticity because of the weight variation for a long time.

Many times, this excess skin is the natural result of age and develops over time, such as wrinkles.

How is arm surgery?
As a first step of surgery, an incision is made in the upper part of the branch. The location and length of this incision vary according to the amount of skin that needs to be removed.

If you have excess fat on the arms, and flaccidity, you can choose to combine brachioplasty with a liposuction of arms, to achieve better results.

How is the recovery of a brachioplasty?
After the surgery, the bandages will be placed and the pain medications will be prescribed to relieve the discomfort during the first days of the postoperative period.

The scar left by this surgery is often minimal, but it is impossible to reassert everything on the edge without leaving a scar. However, it is very possible that time becomes less visible.

Most patients feel that the advantages of brachioplasty are so many that they outweigh the scars it leaves.

Minilifting is a good option when the patient needs a shorter treatment

The minilifting procedure is very similar to lifting, removing excess skin and fat to create a more pleasant and firm look to the arms. However, the difference is that in the minilifitng the incision is much smaller. In some cases, only a small scar is left near the armpits, where it is less visible.

It is usually the option for patients who have lost a weight of weight, with diet and exercises, but who has not achieved a solution in the gym.

Cases of massive weight loss, as in the case of bariatric surgery patients, will require traditional brachioplasty.
